The most powerful eruption of the active volcano, located on the Philippine island of Luzon, occurred in June 1991. The effects of Pinatubo eruption were felt worldwide. It led to the most powerful release of aerosols in the stratosphere and caused a temporary global cooling. At the site of a giant crater 2.5 km in diameter formed the lake.
